Sammanfattning: Passwords are the most common and frequently used authentication mechanism in the world. However, despite years of research and active use in the world, passwords still have many shortcomings and drawbacks. One of the most prevalent challenges of passwords is the difficulty of creating ones that are strong and also easy to remember. Many researchers have explored ways to address this issue, either through developing all new authentication methods, or through pushing users into more desirable behavior. In this study a new approach is explored that aims to help users in creating such passwords by utilizing images as a source of inspiration to create passphrases that are both memorable and secure. The goal is to make use of the strengths of the human factor in password creation rather than suppressing them with strict password requirements, with the aim of ultimately enhancing usability and improving the overall user experience (UX) of the process. To achieve this, a multifaceted password creation method incorporating both graphical and structural principles was proposed, developed and tested to evaluate the effectiveness of its ability to evoke memorable and secure passwords, as well as its level of usability and impact on UX. A UX evaluation was conducted with seven computer-familiar participants, where remote observation and one-on-one interviews were employed to gather a combination of qualitative and quantitative data on participants' interactions with the method and their personal perceptions and subjective experiences of using it. Ultimately, the results uncovered certain areas for improvement in the password creationmethod’s usability. However, the results also demonstrated that the method was successful inevoking memorable and secure passwords from users, while simultaneously providing a positive UX that exceeded participants’ previous password creation experiences. The findings of this study not only contribute to the general understanding of password security and memorability, but also highlights the untapped potential of utilizing the human factor in password creation. By attaining passwords with high standards of memorability and security with only minor compromises to usability, and with an elevation of the general UX, these findings provide valuable UX-based insights into the password security- and UX-research communities, as well as provides suggestions for future iterations of the method, and future research to be conducted.
