Sjuksköterskans roll i vårdandet och bemötandet av barn med cancer : En deskriptiv litteraturstudie

Sammanfattning: Background: Globally, one percent of all people diagnosed with cancer are children. Childhood cancer often requires long and tough treatments. When a child is diagnosed with cancer it also affects the family and the relatives. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the nurse’s role in the care and treatment of children with cancer. The aim was also to examine the data acquisitions of the articles. Method: A literature review with a descriptive design. Through searching in the databases Cinahl, PubMed and Scopus 11 research articles were found. The articles were examined by the purpose of the present study and compose the result of this study. Results: The main result of this literature review identifies communication as a pre-eminent core of the nurse’s role in the care and treatment of children with cancer. Another important part of the role is to create a good and trustful relationship between the patient and the nurse. In the care and treatment of children with cancer the nurse has an important role to ease painful and unpleasant procedures. As a nurse it is also important to possess knowledge and experience to be able to provide the best care as possible. The examination of the methodological aspect showed that semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews, telephone interviews and questionnaires were used to collect data. Conclusion: The nurse has an important role in the care and treatment of children with cancer. The role includes being able to communicate, create good and trustful relationships, ease painful and unpleasant procedures and possess knowledge and experience in the area. There is extensive research on the nurse’s role in the care and treatment of children with cancer, but more research is needed in the area based on the perspective of the child and its relatives.
