Sammanfattning: Abstract Author: Magnus Persson Title: Fas 3 and unemployment – a discourse analysis of the fas 3 debate. [Translated title] Supervisor: Anders Östnäs Assessor: Carina Tigervall The aim of this study was to describe and examine the conceptions and assumptions about unemployment which can be seen in the debate of the Swedish labour market program fas 3. In 2007 the relatively new right wing government introduced the new active labour market program. It has been wildly debated and criticized in media, by politicians and by citizens. Therefore I studied the debate through a social constructive theory and discourse analyze. The empirical data was taken from the database retriever research, and consisted of 37 contemporary debate articles and editorials from big city based newspapers in Sweden. Through the use of coding, the empirical data was divided in to six themes, which were used in the analysis to answer the aim of the study. I found two major different ways of portraying unemployment and unemployed people. One was focusing on societies responsibilities to it´s citizens. The other one were more interested in portraying the unemployed as the reason to unemployment. Pro fas 3 debaters, argued that it was a functioning program, considering the circumstances. While the opponents where negative to the consequences, saying that instead of leading to job opportunities, it has been a big failure. Keywords: unemployment, fas 3, active labour market program, discourse analyze
