Detta är en Master-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Socialantropologi; Lunds universitet/Sociologiska institutionen

Sammanfattning: Violence in general, in Sweden is decreasing, but a specific type of violence, firearm violence among some young men, is increasing. This study is based on acts of violence occurring in the city of Malmö, which has become a symbol of firearm violence in Sweden. By studying social, subcultural and contextual factors, this essay examines the development and the meaning of firearm violence in Malmö. I conclude that the use of firearm is connected to criminal subcultures that arise in socioeconomic areas in Malmö, where some young men are socialized in criminality and the use of violence. The firearm violence is a mean for communication, as well as a mean for settling conflicts, retribution, and a path to a particular type of masculinity. It is also an investment to accumulate symbolic capital, as well as economic, social and cultural capital.
