Sammanfattning: Achieving a transport emission reduction in line with global reduction targets is considered as one of the greatest environmental challenges societies are facing today. As car use continues to increase, there is a need to better understand what influences individuals' choice of transportation and how to bring about behavioural change where fewer choose to travel by car. This study addresses that need by exploring factors that affect the choice between travelling by car and sustainable alternative modes of transport, as well as solutions that could contribute to behavioural change. The focus of the study addresses a knowledge gap in research on behavioural change for sustainable mobility regarding (1) what factors are the most effective to achieve behavioural change, (2) the lack of knowledge in local settings and (3) the lack of studies that combine methods. The study conducted a survey, followed by in-depth interviews with residents living in Järfälla municipality. Gathered data was analysed through summarised statistical measurements, thematic analysis and mapping method. The study showed that speed, practicality and comfort were the main motivating factors for car use, whilst flexibility, cost and environmental awareness were the main motivating factors for alternative modes of transport. In addition, it was found that solutions that could contribute to sustainable behavioural change related to themes such as (1) improved and attractive public transport, (2) improved conditions for walking and cycling, (3) improved possibilities to use shared mobility, (4) reduced need for car use, (5) prioritise and incentivise alternative transport over the car, and (6) changed norms/behaviours. The first two themes were found to be of higher importance to address, but complementary measures also are of importance. Findings also highlighted barriers för behavioural change. The knowledge gained can contribute to informed decision-making when municipalities develop strategies and measures aimed at reducing car usage.
