Sammanfattning: Global statistics show that one in four women who have been in a relationship will have experienced violence from a partner by the time they reach their mid-twenties. Men's violence against women in intimate relationships is a global issue. The purpose of the study has been to understand women's own stories of having been exposed to violence in a close relationship. In order to answer the purpose, a qualitative method has been used in the form of a thematic analysis of three autobiographies written by women who experienced violence in a close relationship. The analysis was based on the theories of the normalization process, the break-up process and the gender system. Using the thematic analysis, the results were divided into main themes and sub-themes. The result shows that the normalization of violence can frequently be identified in the women's stories, in connection with strong emotional ties to the man. Factors that became essential for the break-up process were a physical distance from the man and that the women thus gradually regained their own perception of reality and self-image.
