Sammanfattning: This essay examines the documentary “Tranståget och Tonårsflickorna”, produced as part of the series Uppdrag granskning, a Swedish television program focused on investigative journalism. This study makes use of a critical discourse methodology with a Foucauldian and feminist starting point, adapted to audiovisual materials with inspiration from Gillian Rose´s methodological discussions. The study's theoretical approach consists of a combination of Judith Butler´s and Jack Halberstam´s theories about the heterosexual matrix and its effects on young queer subjects, Stuart Hall's theory about stereotyping representation, Frances Bonners theory about documentaries and its discursive power and Paul Hindemith theory about music as an emotionally communicative form of media. The essays analysis of “Tranståget och Tonårsflickorna” presents examples of stereotyping representations of young trans people and detransitioners as suffering, and illegitimizing representation of trans identity. It also shows examples of representations of trans healthcare, especially in Sweden, as dangerous and careless. One could claim that these representations are part of an argumentative technique that urges for more critique to protect trans folks, but this essay argues that the representational practices in the documentary become destructive in their stereotyping, reducing and sensationalizing qualities, especially since they are communicated through such a discursively powerful form of media as a documentary in the series Uppdrag granskning.
