Sammanfattning: Abstract Author: Chanette Edman Title: Blinded love - a description of how the violence in a relationship is normalized by the victim and what leads to the breakup of the relationship Supervisor: Anna Rypi Assessor: Summary: This is a qualitative text analysis about how women who live in violent relationships describe their experiences in autobiographies. The aim of the study was to find out how the women describe how the violence became a normal state in their everyday lives and to investigate the turning points that made them leave the men. The following questions have been in focus: 1. How do women describe the normalization process? 2. How is the turning point described that causes women to get out of the destructive relationship? Self-biographies written by three women, independently of one another, have been used as empirical data. Examples and quotes from the autobiographies have been analyzed using previous research and theories chosen to suit the purpose of the study. The study has shown that regardless of the nature of the violence that women suffer, the normalization process is described in a similar way. Women living with violent men internalize the man's reality and take on the blame for the violence they are subjected to. Because of the emotional bond the woman has to the man, the breakup becomes a process in several stages. The decision to leave the man must come from the woman herself, even though she gets the advice of others that she must break out of the relationship, she must make the decision to leave him. Only when the emotional band to the man is dissolved is the woman ready to finally leave him.
