   Sammanfattning : This study has been performed as a pilot study for a project regarding the meridional migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and its relationship with lightning activity in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP). Objectives of this study were to analyze and improve lightning data to be used for such a study and to decide on a method and proper time scale of data analysis and ITCZ index development for this study.    Sammanfattning : This paper is a literature study aiming to describe scientists newest theories and knowledge concerning the El Niño and Southern Oscillation. Firstly I have described the ”normal” conditions with rising and sinking air in Hadley- and Walker-cells in the equatorial Pacific and from there moved on to explaining the reversed circulation patterns and higher sea surface temperatures (SST) leading to rising air and anomalous precipitation in eastern Pacific constituting the El Niño phenomenon.
