Detta är en L2-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Statsvetenskapliga institutionen

Sammanfattning: This essay examines the discourse strategies used by the political leaders Donald Trump and Jimmie Åkesson in their respective speeches, with a focus on their representation of immigration as a problem. The study employs Carol Bacchi's “What's the problem represented to be?” approach to analyze the rhetoric in Donald Trump's acceptance speech in 2016 and Jimmie Åkesson's speech from Almedalen 2018 and 2022. Drawing upon securitization theory, framing theory, and discursive psychology, we investigate how these political leaders construct immigration as a problem and shape public perceptions. By utilizing these theoretical frameworks, we uncover the underlying security framings, discursive strategies, and assumptions that characterize their rhetoric and influence their policy proposals. The findings highlight the similarities and differences between Trump and Åkessons approaches to framing immigration as a societal challenge. This analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of how political discourse shapes public opinion and policy debates surrounding immigration.
