Sammanfattning: Moral education is a hot topic in Swedish school discourse. Some critics mean that some fundamental values stated in the curriculum are not thoroughly justified and that the doctrine hinders students and teachers to form their own worldview. The purpose of this study was to investigate how values can be conveyed in textbooks in second language learning in relation to theories by the critics Pia Nykänen and David O. Kronlid. The study presents values within social ethics which are found in the Spanish textbook Caminando 3 through a discourse analysis and describes if the values are either justified, presented with alternative perspectives on ethical questions or if they are portrayed unjustified one-sidedly. Both critics mean that moral education needs to focus on the ability to cope with a pluralistic moral landscape which is in constant change. The study shows that the parts of the textbook portraying discursive values such as liberal-democratic ideals are presented without alternative perspectives but with an discursive development ideal as justifying mean whilst the collaborative values, such as what to do on your free time, how to picture your partner and in what kind of building to live, are often portrayed in a more neutral way with several alternatives. The study gives a few pointers towards ideas on how to work with moral education in a not indoctrinated way and how to use already existing material and new models in the continuous search for a good moral education in a secular and diverse society.
