Detta är en Magister-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Avdelningen för ABM, digitala kulturer samt förlags- och bokmarknadskunskap

Sammanfattning: The information market is constantly changing. With new and improved information technology more people get access to more information faster. However, the number of people educated to handle information also increases. Business intelligence has for a long time been a well-known tool for companies to be competitive. Because of the increased access to information the competition between companies has intensified and more people have become aware of the advantages of business intelligence and how it can help them compete. Business intelligence is about how to gather, analyse and use information to make it profitable for the company. One tool is Information Management. Library and Information Science (LIS) is an area where Information Management is a great part. The aim of this study is to see if the education in Library and Information Science in Sweden gives the competences needed to work with business intelligence at a private company. Representatives from the Library and Information Science education were interviewed, and also persons who work with business intelligence in companies. The result shows that the tasks of business intelligence have a greater extent than what the education in Library and Information Science in Sweden can offer. The failing part mainly seems to be the analysis of the information and the analysis of the information need of the company but also a kind of business thinking which is required to be able to work with these tasks. This knowledge is today not provided at the LIS education in Sweden. To be able to give more satisfying knowledge in this area the education has to develop a number of subjects. These are among other things: Knowledge management, Informetrics and Information Resources Management.
