"En slam säger mer än tusen ord"

Sammanfattning: In an area where men are dominating the subculture of skateboard I seek to distinguish their view on issues and solutions on non cis-male participation. In this study, theories about gender as a social construction, presented by Butler (1990), Young (1990) and Connell (2005), are applied in order to analyze two focus group interviews with ten skateboarding men in total. The results show that the masculine norm requires new participants’ to enter the skate culture through risk-taking and adaptation to the current social hierarchy. Drawing from theory, I suggest that other groups are less likely to make a fair estimate of their physical capacity due to a lack of representation and current social status. The men see emerging changes in the subculture as it has become more welcoming, but points out that other groups should find their own time and place to skateboard if they cannot adapt to the preexisting masculine norms of physical attributes, risk-taking and individual responsibility. I have through this study developed solutions as to create safe-spaces for groups outside the cis-male norm and for males (and media) to a greater extent encourage other groups’ precence on the skatescene.
