The quena and the siku - A comparison between Bolivian and Peruvian playing techniques

This is an investigation into the differences and similarities concerning playing techniques of the quena (Andes end-blown flute) and the siku (Andes panpipes) between Bolivia and Peru, as it is used in the traditional music of the Andes. The background material consists of interviews with five important quena and siku players, two players are from Bolivia and three players from Peru. The results illustrate the differences in playing techniques between the two countries. The main finding is mainly the national differences between players in each nation concerning the embouchure and articulation used for the quena and the siku.
