Sammanfattning: This thesis will examine how human language is used to, consciously and unconsciously, legitimize exploitation of nonhuman animals in the meat industry. I will examine how these functions, including carnist ideology, work to maintain the social institution within the meat industry. The study will also examine if language can be used to “subjectify” animals normally associated with the meat industry and the results following by doing so. By studying the TV-series Köttets Lustar (2017) I conclude that there are multiple ways of using speciesist language to legitimize the exploitation and killing of nonhuman animals. This can be done by for example constructing the nonhuman animal as a thing or part of a mass. I also conclude that “subjectifying” a nonhuman animal by acknowledging their personality, individuality and intellect does something to our will to kill and eat them.
