Sammanfattning: In the recent decade, European populist radical right parties have gained stronger position in politics, which is seen in both stronger voter support but also in greater legitimacy and increased political influence. However, there are differences between the newer and older member states of the European Union. Among the Eastern countries, who joined the union in 2004 or 2007, there are fewer successful populist radical right parties. Although, one country that stands out is Hungary, where the populist radical right party Jobbik is the third largest party with a voter support of around 20 percent. This paper investigates why Hungary has such a strong populist radical right party considering other countries in the region do not. This is achieved by studying the demand side for such a party on a macro- level. The selected theories are based on the emerge of a radical right-wing populist parties in the event of an economic crises, political crises, modernization, ethnic backlash and authoritarian legacy. Throughout this paper, it becomes apparent that the authoritarian legacy that Hungary possesses has given Jobbik a good position, but the economic situation, both before and after the global financial crisis in 2007, as well as political developments in the country, have contributed to Jobbik’s political success.
