Sammanfattning: Sports journalism is often considered to be of what Pierre Bourdieu would classify as a lower taste than for example investigative journalism. This study examines whether this classification of sports journalism could be attributed to its use of literary and rhetorical strategies, using Anna Jungstrands dissertation The Literarity of Reportage: On Literarity as a Journalistic Strategy and Ethics as a theoretical basis. Journalistic reportages, as a discipline in the field of journalism studies, remains a relatively underexplored subject, as most research in this field is focused on news journalism, and not on more story-driven reporting journalism. Furthermore, studies in the field of sports journalism is an underrepresented sub-field in journalism studies. As a result of these facts, the importance of a scientific study examining the literary and rhetorical aspects of sports journalism appears as quite significant. The aim of this study is to identify and elucidate possible literary and rhetorical differences in two journalistic genres: sports journalism and general journalism. What are the most prominent differences in the use of literary strategies and rhetorical tropes, as presented by Jungstrand and Janne Lindqvist respectively, in Offside and Filter, and what could then be the cause of these, if identified, differences? The body of material examined in this study contains ten journalistic texts of Filter and Offside each, making up a total of twenty texts. Through qualitative text analysis, with a select number of literary strategies, as presented by Jungstrand, and rhetorical tropes, as presented by Lindqvist, as variables, we are able to distinguish literary and rhetorical patterns, which are then presented as follows. We found that there are some significant differences in the use of literary strategies and rhetorical tropes between the two genres sports journalism and general journalism. For example, dissonance of the narrative ego, intertextuality, and a language rich in rhetorical tropes are found in abundance in Offside, whilst appearing not as frequently or as apparent in Filter. These differences could be attributed to the contrasting traits between two characteristics in reportages: the reportage of the where, and the reportage of the what. The texts in Offside are mainly reportages of the where, as to why rich descriptions of surroundings and characters are frequent and apparent.. Filter mostly consists of reportages of the what, as to why it mainly focuses on a more sober presentation of specific subjects, rather than literary and rhetorical strategies. Filters subtle use of these strategies align with what Bourdieu would classify as high taste. The opposite is to be said of Offside, which through facile effects and an obtrusive elegance, rather could be aligned with low taste.
