Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Nationalekonomiska institutionen

Sammanfattning: The role of patents within innovation and growth is heavily discussed. Some scholars argue that with patents incentives for innovation is created, other argue that the effect of patent is highly limited. Within in economic growth the Schumpeter model states that patent is crucial for innovation, which creates a domino effect that later on increase productivity and increases economic growth. With that in mind this study aims to examine the relationship between patent and growth in GDP per capita. In order to investigate this connection, the study will use panel data for 34 out of 35 OECD-countries, with data that reaches back to 1980. A regression with several variables connected to growth from a Schumpeter perspective showed that patent had no significant effect on economic growth.
