Bitcoins som parallell världsvaluta

Detta är en Magister-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Nationalekonomiska institutionen

Sammanfattning: This academic paper focuses on the virtual currency Bitcoin and its possibility of being a parallel currency. Bitcoin has grown in popularity over the last few years and has risen to the attention of the governments, journalists and investors alike. The main aspects of bitcoins are its protection against inflation, pseudonymity and decentralization. This leads to several potential issues for the virtual currency in the form of deflation problems, change in perception and lack of traceability. These and other aspects and issues are studied with the help of different currency forms and historical currency systems. The analysis is performed by extracting characteristics from the theory and empirical research presented, which are then observed as criteria and applied on bitcoins and other currency forms. The findings of the research show that there are great differences between bitcoins and a parallel currency, especially on three extracted criteria; the lack of circulation of money, institutional independence and the limit on bitcoins. The future aspects of bitcoins tend to lean towards an alternative investment asset alongside gold. The main conclusion from the results is that Bitcoin will find it hard to achieve the status of parallel currency. It is viewed by many as a risky asset in this point of time, being a currency and payment method only as a secondary function. The key to improve the prospects of Bitcoin is to resolve the limit problem and reassure the security of handling the bitcoins by issuing warranties.
