Sammanfattning: This essay is a qualitative case study comparing Union of the Russian people (URP) and Kuomintang (KMT). Both were active in the Russian revolution and the Chinese republican revolution. The aim of this study is to use three selected theories to examine how these two nationalistic groups played a role in respective revolutions. But also how the degree of institutionalization could explain why the Chinese revolution had a larger nationalistic impact. The theories in use will be a modernization theory of nationalism by Ernest Gellner, the second theory of institutionalization by Samuel P. Huntington and Crane Brinton’s theory about revolutions. This study shows that Ernest Gellner’s theory could explain the emergence of URP and KMT but not why nationalism were stronger in China during the revolution. The second and the third theories I use is combined together and shows that the degree of institutionalization is higher in Kuomintang’s case and that the break-even point can be seen in both of the cases in the crisis stage. The results of this study shows that the institutionalization model could explain to why the nationalistic tendencies were stronger in China than Russia during the revolutions.
