Vad som lämnades i jorden: Det radioaktiva arvet

Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Statsvetenskapliga institutionen

Sammanfattning: War has for a long time been fought at the expense of civilians. Depleted uranium has been one such object used in war that in the end would leave its mark on the civilian population and still today is the subject of discussions regarding its use. By using just war theory I will evaluate the American and British use of depleted uranium against the civilian populations of Iraq and former Yugoslavia. The aim of the study is to say whether the use of depleted uranium is justified or not in regards to its effects on the civilian population. With a growing scientific understanding of depleted uranium's properties it still remains available to be used in wars. To understand why a weapon has been used in conflicts even though it affects civilians with its properties. By using a normative method to analyze a weapon that kills on impact and with its remains this study aims to evaluate its power. With the theoretical framework this study can show the impact on civilians by foreign powers during and after a conflict. Due to its longlasting effects the use of depleted uranium can not be justified through Jus in bello and jus post bellum.
