Sammanfattning: Article 3(6) of the European Union Directive 2003/54/EC, enshrined in Swedish law through the electricity law (Ellag, SFS 1997:857), lays down the requirement of electricity disclosure. Electricity suppliers are to provide consumers with information about the origin of their electricity and its environmental impacts. The law as well as additional recommendations by the responsible authority, Energimarknadsinspektionen, leave electricity suppliers with much freedom regarding the layout of their respective electricity disclosure. The aim of this study is to examine whether the electricity disclosures of Swedish electricity suppliers are in line with the literatures’ recommendations on this matter. Specifically, five aspects are considered: placement of electricity disclosure, use of diagrams and tables, type of energy source, reference information and product versus portfolio. Moreover, the study aims to give an insight into the electricity suppliers’ perspective on electricity disclosure, through interviews. The results show that the electricity disclosures vary greatly in layout. To some extent they are in line with the literatures’ recommendations, but not fully. Hence, the study gives ten concrete recommendations regarding how the electricity disclosures can be improved. Also, three recommendations are given for future research. The interviews show that the electricity suppliers face some challenges, specifically regarding the communication of electricity disclosure towards consumers. This, along with the fact that the layout of electricity disclosures varies, suggest a need for more extensive policy-making and a more active governing role. Hence, the study also gives two recommendations to the responsible authority for electricity disclosure, Energimarknadsinspektionen.
