Kampen mot hemlöshet - En kvalitativ intervjustudie av bostadsmodeller som syftar till att motverka vuxna missbrukares hemlöshet

Sammanfattning: This study aims to investigate how social workers within housing accommodation work with the Staircase model and Housing First model to support homeless substance abuse clients on their way out of homelessness. My focus was to compare these two housing models with each other within the city of Helsingborg and investigate how the social workers experienced how the Staircase model and Housing First model affected the clients’ living conditions, promoted independence, and how they help the clients with substance abuse. In my study, I used qualitative methods to get the necessary information I needed to answer the research questions. I was interviewing five social workers working within housing accommodation using a semi-structured guide to get a deeper understanding of the social workers working methods with homeless clients. The results and analysis showed that some main factors were affecting the living conditions of the clients within these two models such as debts and the social service´s lack of apartments for their clients. In the Staircase model, there were some unexpected results that showed that many homeless clients received a housing contract directly with the landlord instead of through the social as a middle part to get a housing contract on their own. The results also showed that the clients within the Staircase model did not have to be completely free from substance abuse to reach a housing contract on their own, which is opposite to previous research. The advantage of the Housing First model is that the clients do not have to be free from debts at the Swedish Enforcement Authority. Compared to the Staircase model, which has limitations on how much debt at the Swedish Enforcement Authority a client can have, this limitation does not exist within the Housing First model. The biggest challenge within both models is the lack of apartments for this group of people.
