Sammanfattning: Introduction: The Emergency department is  a place where the environment can be stressful with high workload and a high patient flow. These factors can affect the encounter between the nurse and patient. Lack of kind treatment can result in wrong health care treatment and wrong diagnosis for the patient, which affects the patient safety and care experience.  Purpose: To describe adult patient's experience of treatment at emergency departments.  Method: Descriptive literature study with 12 original articles, articles with a qualitative method were selected. The different sub themes describes different aspects of how the patient experienced the encounterment at the emergency department. The communication between the patient and the nurse was the sub theme that affected the patients experience mostly in a positive way, but also in a negative way.  Conclusion: The nurses encounter in the emergency department affects the patient in a positive but also negative way. The communication between the patient and nurse was the factor that affected the treatment to the greatest extent, both positive and negative. Good treatment can reduce suffering for the patient, make the patient trust the nurse and feel safe during the visit. This is possible if the nurse gives the patient clear and adequate information upon arrival at the emergency department but also by treating the patient with a good attitude.  Keywords: Emergency department, experiences, patients, treatment
