Sammanfattning: This study aimed to provide insight into how minority stress might manifest itself in the lives of racialized LGBTQ people. Based on an intersectional perspective, this study explored experiences and understandings of microaggressions, as well as strategies and approaches used to manage specific situations and their consequences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten individuals who challenged social norms regarding gender, sexuality and whiteness. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the interviews and resulted in two main themes: “Resistance and strategies” and “Questioning and sense making”. Participants reported microaggressions that questioned or invalidated different aspects of their identities. Furthermore, examples of exoticization and intrusive questions with reference to origin and sexuality were described. Such microaggressions were associated with an increased vigilance and feelings of otherness. Resistance and strategies were flexibly used depending on situation and resources in the moment. Confrontation, avoidance and making the microaggressions visible were examples on how the participants managed minority stress in their daily lives. The result of the study provides an increased understanding of the participants’ experiences of minority stress with an intersectional perspective and highlights the need for more research in this area in order to improve the mental health of LGBTQ people in Sweden.
