Sammanfattning: The urbanization and the climate changes are putting pressure on municipalities. A lot of times a denser city and a greater use of public transport is presented as solutions to plan for a more sustainable development. This is a case study on a municipality in Sweden, Kristianstad in the area of Scania, where interviews and document analysis has helped to study the municipality’s rural development. These methods have been used to study what the rural development looks like in the municipality of Kristianstad and questions regarding that subject. The empirical material has been analyzed with connection to theories about local structure such as Walter Christaller’s Central place theory and Polycentrism, and the concept of sustainable development. Questions regarding how the municipality could plan to make it easier for the people living in the countryside to be able to make more ecologically sustainable decisions are answered. This study shows that the municipality could do more to make it easier to make sustainable choices in the countryside but they are not that willing to make the big investments that are needed.
