Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Socialhögskolan

Sammanfattning: The aim of this study was to analyse the discourse of what came to be referred to as the ”refugee crisis” and how it was portrayed in three major newspapers in Sweden. The aim was to analyse articles from the autumn of 2015 and analyse which types of discourses that appeared in conjunction with the ”refugee crisis”. The newspaper was Sydsvenskan, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet and the study has consisted of five articles from each newspaper. The study was based on Norman Faircloughs critical discourse analysis with focus on his three dimensional model. In the study, two crucial discourses were identified. The discourses were crisis and resources. The study shows who has the right to be heard in the articles and the results is that politicians and journalist are the “claims-makers”. Although the term ”crisis” is mentioned a lot, it is rarely defined inside the discourse of crisis. The few times crisis is defined, the focus depends on how there is a lack of resources. The discourse of resources repeatedly mentions and refers to economics expenses and the lack of resources. The analysis of the right to speak shows that politicians are the most likely and refugees are the least likely to be heard in the articles. The outcome of this study showed that the “refugee crisis” was portrayed with negative discourses due to the words used in media to describe the “crisis” and it is common that politicians contributes to the negative view because of the way they express themselves. The relevancy for social work in this study is shown in how media portray the “refugee crisis” in a wat that influences the readers mindset to refugees and influences social workers policy’s in their work with refugees.
