Sammanfattning: This study investigates the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, 2021, in order to find out whether the takeover was a result of undeveloped state institutions. In this case study, the takeover is examined according to the theoretical approach of fragile states. Undeveloped state institutions are operationalized through the degree of financial support they recieve. The other main variable, takeover, is operationalized through regime change. For this to be tested, a process-tracing method was put to use in order to identify the intervening causal process between the two main variables. Considering the result of the analysis, the conclusion is made that the hypothesized relationship between undeveloped institutions and regime change finds support in this paper. Though, through the lack of information, the hypothesized relationship was more difficult to assess regarding some of the investigated institutions in this paper. Moreover, the analysis also identified other variables which produce a causal relationship between the two main variables: corruption, poor management and inefficiency.
