Kvartersbadet

Sammanfattning: My master’s thesis is derived from a personal interest in Finnish public saunas and the way they relate to the city. In the first chapter I describe Swedish bathing culture and how it has been perceived over time. I explore various bathing cultures around the world and theories concerning thermal delight, nakedness, intimacy and rituals, among others. The thesis ends with a design proposal for a public bathhouse in central Malmö, based upon the results of my investigations. The chapter ¨ett bad¨ (“a bath”) describes the way in which the bathhouse should be experienced by a visitor.
