Sammanfattning: This paper aims to investigate and discuss how reading old texts can be made meaningful and thus enjoyable for students in grade 7-9 and upper secondary school. The opportunities and obstacles that may arise are also part of the research question. It has come to our attention that today’s students find older literature too boring and difficult to read, which raises concerns considering the fact that a literary canon may be established in Sweden. To answer our research question, we have searched for both national and international sources in various databases. We have chosen ten sources that are all peer-reviewed, most of which are not older than 2010. In addition, we have applied Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis method to identify and analyze themes in our materials. Our results show, among other things, that there are several ways to spark students’ interest in literary history. These include not only the choice of content, but also methods and the teachers’ ability to lead and organize teaching. Finally, our results show that framework factors and opinions about what reading means also influence students’ interest in reading.
