Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Avdelningen för modevetenskap

Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study is to examine why individuals choose the clothes they do and what influence the social group and other social aspects have on this choice. More specifically, the objects of this study are the sororities Malmö Nation, Sydskånska Nation and Smålands Nation at Lund University. The paper is an ethnographic study where six individuals, active at one of these three sororities, have been interviewed. Furthermore, an observation at each sorority was performed. The theoretical framework that has been used is Bourdieu’s perspective of habitus, capital and taste along with Goffman’s dramaturgical perspective. The study shows that there are many underlying aspects influencing the informants choice of clothing style. A major factor in this choice is the informants separate backgrounds, which have given them different perceptions and values that make them attracted to different sororities and styles. Moreover, the belonging to one sorority influences the informants, which eventually develop a similar taste within the sorority. Lastly, this study also draws the conclusion that similar clothing style is a big part of group cohesion
