Detta är en L2-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Statsvetenskapliga institutionen

Sammanfattning: This thesis employs process tracing to examine the retreat of state authority and the rise of military coups in Burkina Faso, set against the backdrop of the Sahel region's complex political dynamics. The study delineates the erosion of state capacity and the causality with the proliferation of military coups. Our findings reveal a cyclical pattern where weakened state authority precipitates military coups, which further destabilizes the state's governance capacity. The study uncovers the interplay between state capacity and military dominance, accentuated by an intrastate neorealist perspective. This perspective highlights the internal power struggles, the role of military forces as political actors, and the survival strategies within the state apparatus. The research contributes to the understanding of state capacity and military coups, offering insights into the broader implications for state-military relations and the challenges of maintaining state sovereignty and effective governance in a region marked by political upheaval.
