Sammanfattning: Title: Folk musical influences in Swedish and Greek popular music - a comparative study. What folk music influences Swedish and Greek folk music students can find in popular music and how they reason about them. Author: Michael Sideridis The purpose of this study is to determine the possible influences of folk music in Swedish and Greek popular music and make a comparison between the two. It also aims to find similarities and differences in how the Swedish and Greek folk music students reason about folk music influences in popular music to illuminate the subject from different angles. Swedish and Greek popular music are different and similar in terms of the genre's development to date. Each country's geography has been crucial in terms of outside influences. Greece unlike Sweden lies on the border between East and West, which to some extent has influenced the Greek music in a certain direction. Swedish popular music early got Anglo-American influences, which came to influence Swedish music for a long time to come. Eventually similar influences also found their way to Greece. My method of collecting data was to play music from the charts, ten Swedish songs and seven Greek songs to three Swedish informants and two Greek informants, and interview them about their experiences. The interviews have been analyzed by adopting a hermeneutic perspective. The result shows that folk music is not equally remembered in the Swedish music as in the Greek, but that it is difficult to determine in the Swedish case, what actually constitutes the concept of folk music. The result also shows how outside influences, particularly American ones, have much influence in the selected song collection for the study and that cultural imperialism "stands at the threshold", but has not yet taken over completely, neither in Sweden nor in particular in Greece. It has also been shown in my conversations with the informants in both countries how I can discuss my problem without being misunderstood since we share a common reference system.
