Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Socialhögskolan

Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study was to explore the connection between substance abuse and completed/attempted suicide. Central questions were who the substance abusers who commit suicidal actions were. The study also tries to find out which factors that contributes to this behaviour and why it is so common amongst substance abusers. All from the point of view of three scientist and three persons working with treatment of addicts who were interviewed. The results of these interviews were analysed on an individual level with a psychological theory. On a "middle" level with a social-psychological theory and on a structural level with a sociological theory. The study shows that many different factors, for example loss, depression, somatic complications, poor social life, loneliness and many more contributes to addicts suicidal behaviour. In the analysis it was determined that these factors, according to the psychological theory used in the study, made the individual feel self-hate that lead to substance abusers suicide. According to the social psychological theory this factors contributes to feelings of inadequacy which leads to suicide. From the sociological theory on the other hand, isolation, which is a factor of societies high demands, was the dominant reason for addicts suicide. Suicide is still a complex phenomena and all of these explanations combined can probably only solve a piece of this puzzle.
