The survey places particular emphasis on horticultural historical values and how these are translated from theory to practice. The study also draws general conclusions about the reconstruction of historic gardens. Carl Larsson-gården is an artist's home in Sundborn, Dalarna where the artists Carl and Karin Larsson lived from 1888-1928 together with their 8 children. The home is visited annually by 40-50,000 people. Carl Larsson depicted the family's everyday life in a large amount of artwork which was also published in several books during the artists' lifetime. For generations of Swedes, the images have become synonymous with traditions, creativity, and family life. The garden was an important component in Carl Larsson's artistic expression, and is depicted in a large number of artworks, which formed an important source material for the reconstruction. Karin Larsson gave up painting when she and Carl Larsson started a family, but instead came to translate her artistry into the home, where she created abstract textiles, modern furniture, and an opulent garden. The reconstruction has further connected to Karin Larsson's artistry as it was Karin Larsson who was the driving force behind the lush garden. The essay consists of two parts where the first part describes the preliminary study carried out by landscape architect Inger Berglund.
