Med färg som verktyg

Sammanfattning: The purpose of this thesis is to broaden my understanding of color as a creative tool of architecture in spatiality. The study will focus on different spatial phenomenons that can arise depending on how color interacts with objects, surfaces and spatiality. Parallel to this, different tools will be identified and then practiced in order to find ways for color to be included in the early design process. In order to gather information for the survey, interviews, literature studies, study visits and laboratory work have been carried out. The interviewees are architects, colorists and designers who create with a focus on color in space. These interviews will revolve around how the designer thinks about using color as a tool. How do they go about it? How does their working approach relate to theory, experience, desire and intuition? The laboratories will be a large part of the project and the focus will be on the process. The spatial phenomenons will be studied with the help of various tools by examining form, color and light in interaction. The experience of color is the core of the investigation. What is experienced as harmonious, chaotic or dynamic? Heavy or light? How are scale and spatial hierarchies experienced? How can architectural qualities be created using color? How can we use color so that the value of the spatiality is strengthened? The main question I’ve chosen to work through is: How can color as a tool support spatial design? The report will not deal with the colors themselves with subjective findings such as ”pink is more beautiful than blue”. It will address how colors relate to each other: how dark or light, how saturated or desaturated, how matte or glossy. How color relates to spatiality will be investigated using different scenographies where the properties of colors are tested and analyzed. Although color theory can contribute to the understanding of how colors interact, I don’t want to focus too narrowly at perfect formulas calculated in theory. In my point of view there is no clear answer, right or wrong. Establishing what to do or what is correct is not the purpose of this report. Instead, I want to show ways you can apply different tools to see what color can do for spatiality. What I want to find out is how we can tackle such a complex subject as color in different ways and use its formative potential in architecture to the best of our ability.
