Gender nonconforming behaviour is depicted as behaviour that does not obey gender roles or expectations, linking the responsive quality of such behaviours to the traits of hegemonic masculinity exerted by the male characters who represent and perpetuate a patriarchal system: St John Rivers and Edward Rochester. Wide Sargasso Sea, Circe and Hag-Seed are three novels that, while remaining similar in that they are rewrites of canonised literature such as Jane Eyre, The Odyssey, and The Tempest, are different enough to provide a wide array of examples of rewrites.
