   Sammanfattning : The purpose of this qualitative analysis was to research if and how gender is portrayed in picture books for children in Swedish preschools. Based on Hirdman’s gender system theory(1988, 2001) I analyzed the book characters in text and illustrations, to see if gender contracts between the sexes are visible, and what dichotomies might be challenged. The theory used is based on Berger’s and Luckmann’s theory about Social construction, Bjerrum Nielsen’s and Rudberg’s theory about Gender socialization, Gens’ theory How girls becomes women and boys becomes men and Hirdman’s theory about Gender contracts.
