Sammanfattning: Title: Climate Change as Experience - A Study on Climate- and Sustainability Communication in Museums Public perception on climate- and sustainability issues is shaped by how they are presented in media and by other communicative actors - like museums. This thesis explores how museum activities can increase public engagement and awareness on climate change and sustainability. The research has been conducted by interviewing museum staff from Moderna Museet in Malmö (an art museum) and Fredriksdal museum and garden in Helsingborg (an open-air museum). In addition, a reception study has been conducted where visitors answered how they experienced the museum activities and how it affected their understanding and engagement for these issues. Aside from their structural differences, this study shows a similarity between the museums view on how to create constructive communication and mediation. The activities are meant to generate spaces for dialogue, reflection, learning and engagement. The mediation should be free from moralization, according to the museum staff. Instead it should be an experience with different perspectives and approaches on the issues. Most visitors are positive towards the activities and how the museums communicate on climate and sustainability. Their answers are in line with the museums' intentions. Some of them answered they already engage in climate issues. Most of the others state that they have been given more motivation to engage after taking part in the activities. This study concludes that a dialogic approach, together with showing multiple perspectives and possibilities are crucial in shaping engagement and awareness. Which, in turn, is necessary for a more climate friendly and sustainable world.
