   Sammanfattning : In the beginning of the 20th Century with the emergence of a new musical language as the Second Viennese School (Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, and Anton Webern) took over, suddenly music pushed forward and away from traditional harmony, rhythm and even notation. Music started to lose its traditional feel of patterns, cadences and regularity and instead embraced new complexity, as composers started to avoid time signature patterns, tonal melodies, and harmonies.    Sammanfattning : In this paper I am studying the orchestral work Lontano (1967) by György Ligeti (1923-2006) and its use in the films The Shining (1980), by Stanley Kubrick, and Shutter Island (2010), by Martin Scorsese. The purpose has been to apply an unusual perspective on film music, based on one selected musical work and how it is used in moving images, instead of the more common method where the entire soundtrack of one specific movie is studied.
