   Sammanfattning : stater bildats på internationellt initiativ vilket verkade fungera under 40 år för Jugoslavien men de etniska motsättningarna i landet utnyttjades av nationalistiska partier efter kommunismens fall vilket trappade upp de etniska konflikterna och resulterade i ett inbördeskrig som varade i fyra år. 1994 hölls det ett fredssamtal i Dayton vilket resulterade i ett fredsavtal, The General Framework Agreement for Peace (GFAP).
