Sammanfattning: The study aimed to investigate the working methods of nursing home managers in orderto facilitate self-determination for elderly individuals with dementia. Eight managers were interviewed in a qualitative interview study. The focus of the study was on the triad: "nursing home managers – care staff – elderly persons with dementia." The results showed that difficulties related to the values of different groups within the triad and contradictory legislation could constitute obstacles to the self-determination of persons with dementia. In general, nursing managers' working methods were about reaching consensus on self-determination issues within the triad. Consensus could be achieved through dialogue and sustainable relationships, where the empathy ability was needed. The role of nursing home manager, based on the study results, can be described as acreator of consensus and values and as an agent of change. The other strategies that emerged in the study results can be regarded as typical for the context “nursing home” and those are the following: to increase the participation of persons with dementia, break isolation and adapt housing routines and physical environment to the needs of persons with dementia. The result was interpreted using the interactionist perspective
