    Sammanfattning : This thesis studies the effect of military training on one's willingness to defend by answering the question: How does military training influence the likelihood of people expressing (or having) a willingness to defend one's country? Using difference-in-differences and IV approaches within a linear probability model framework, it exploits two exogenous variations in conscription policy on new survey data in Sweden.     Sammanfattning : Although island disputes have returned to the geopolitical theatre on a small scale, to date, virtually no previous research on territorial interstate island disputes and violent escalation exists. This paper argues that when an island is positioned in a strategic location, because of its unique attacking, defending, and trade capabilities this may induce a willingness towards- and eventual use of violence in the attempt to conquer or defend the territory. The study was conducted through a survey of 102 Swedish high school students at Borgarskolan in Malmö where the respondents were asked a number of questions that measured their social exclusion in society based on three variables: trust in the state, national pride and descent, as well as questions that measured their willingness to defend Sweden.
