Such network function virtualization imposes additional packet latencies and potential bottlenecks not present in legacy network equipment when run on dedicated hardware; such bottlenecks include PCIe transfer delays, virtualization overhead, and utilizing commodity server hardware which is not optimized for packet processing operations.
