Sammanfattning: This present study examined differences in construal of self-esteem by children with individualistic and collectivistic cultural backgrounds measured by the Swedish scale Jag tycker jag är (I think I am). The study also examined gender differences on different facets of self-esteem, both between and within the culture groups. There were 731 participants in the sample. The collectivistic children scored lower on the subscales measuring relations and social emotions. The patterns of gender differences were different within the groups. Swedish girls scored lower than Swedish boys on the subscales measuring general self-esteem, physical qualities, skills and affect. There were no statistically significant gender differences in the collectivistic group. The effect sizes were mostly low which is normal for cross-cultural and gender studies of self-esteem.
