Sammanfattning: Purpose: The aim of this study is to elucidate adolescents’ narratives about their experiences of livingwith a hearing impairment.Method: Seven adolescents with hearing impairment are interviewed in a qualitative semi-structuredinterview study. The interviews are analysed with a thematic content analysis method, with a hermeneuticpoint of departure.Result: The analysis results in nine themes, which are sorted based on the study’s questions of issue. Thethemes are: Feeling of exclusion, Strategies to achieve self-acceptance, The importance of technology,Feeling of being secure, Hearing persons’ understanding of hearing impairment, Solidarity, Socialcontext, The surrounding community and Knowledge.Conclusion: Based on the results of the study it appears that some of the informants found it difficult toaccept their hearing impairment as part of their identity when they were younger. The family andsurrounding community are described as factors affecting the process of acceptance. The feeling of beingsecure and the use of assistive hearing devices are described as reasons why the informants experience ahigher degree of activity and participation. When communication opportunities are lacking, activity andparticipation ability deteriorates. It appears that the informants feel that the community has a lack ofknowledge about hearing impairments and assistive hearing devices.
