Sammanfattning: In large and/or complex buildings, which can contain a lot of people, it’s important to ensure that evacuation in case of fire or other threats can be performed safely. In this report, the possibility to use Microsoft Kinect v2 for evacuation is examined to determine whether it can be used to provide dynamic crowd management systems and rescue services with information. This is done by an initial analyse of already conducted studies on Kinect followed by experiments testing its performance in a smoke filled room. The results of the study shows that Microsoft Kinect works with a good precision and ability to detect humans, but on the down side it has a short working range and performs very poorly in smoke. To improve Kinect and make it more useful for evacuation purposes it is suggested to increase the wavelength of the infrared light, which most likely will enhance its working range and function in smoke. More research still needs to be conducted on the Kinect hardware and software in order to make sure it’s suitable to use for evacuation purposes.
