  1. 11. Analysing the seal-fishery conflict in the Baltic Sea and exploring new ways of looking at marine mammal movement data

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies

    Författare :Ornella Jogi; [2017]
    Nyckelord :Halichoerus grypus; Phoca hispida botnica; seal-fishery conflict; human-wildlife conflict; integrated step selection analysis;

    Sammanfattning : A comprehensive analysis of the available data reveals that there is currently not enough information for making informed management decisions regarding the seal-fishery conflict in the Baltic Sea. Knowledge of hidden and visual damages is limited, which means that the actual cost to the fishing industry from damages is not known. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Attack behavior and presence of grey seals around pots : a search for seal-safe cod-pots in the Baltic sea

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. Of Aquatic Resources

    Författare :Jasmine Stavenow; [2016]
    Nyckelord :grey seal; Halichoerus grypus; seal behavior; seal attacks; seal presence; sealsafe; seals-fishery conflict; seals and fishery; fishing gear; cod-pots; sustainable fishing; Baltic sea; coastal fishery;

    Sammanfattning : The seals and the fishery are forced to share the role as top-predators in the Baltic waters since they both depend on the same fish stocks, which leads to an unavoidable competition. Seals are raiding traps, leading not only to costly damaged fishing gears and loss in fish catch but also to the seals themselves getting caught and drowned in the gears as by-catch. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Explaining catch efficiency of cod pots using in situ behavioural studies

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. Of Aquatic Resources

    Författare :Maria Hedgärde; [2016]
    Nyckelord :Grey seal; ; cod; CPUE; Fish behaviour; Seals-fishery conflict; Fishing gear; cod pot;

    Sammanfattning : The seal populations in the Baltic have been growing since the 1980s causing great eco-nomic losses for the fisheries since seals are using fishing gear as easy food sources. One solution to the seal and fishery conflict is the development of seal safe fishing gear. Pots are a possible solution in the cod (Gadus morhua) fishery. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Marine mammal behavior response to sonars, a review

    Kandidat-uppsats, Institutionen för fysik, kemi och biologi; Tekniska högskolan

    Författare :Anna Linderhed; [2013]
    Nyckelord :Nyckelord Keyword: Marine mammal; anthropogenic noise; sonar; behaviour; risk assessment models;

    Sammanfattning : During the last decades the problems caused by anthropogenic sound and noise in oceans have been recognized in public, by governments, and military. With the use of active sonar, different choices can be made to minimize the risk of damaging or disturbing marine mammals. For this purpose knowledge of sonar disturbance is crucial. LÄS MER

  5. 15. An Optimal Foraging Perspective on Early Holocene Human Prey Choice on Gotland : Affluence or Starvation?

    Magister-uppsats, Institutionen för kultur, energi och miljö

    Författare :Ingegärd Enander Malmros; [2012]
    Nyckelord :Gotland; grey seal; Holocene; hunter-gatherer; Mesolithic; Optimal Foraging Theory; OFT; 8.2 ka BP cold event; Zen Road;

    Sammanfattning : The Optimal Foraging Theory, rooted in the processual archaeology, uses a measuring methodology where the foraging strategy that gives the highest payoff measured as the highest ratio of energy gain per time unit is analysed (Mac Arthur & Pianca 1966, Emlen 1966). The theory is a branch of evolutionary ecology why much attention is paid to the interdependence of humans and preys and environmental conditions caused by climatologically and geographical changes or by overexploitation or other changes caused by humans.
