Sammanfattning: January 1, 1999, a new sex purchase law was introduced in Sweden, Lag (1998: 408). The law implies that in a sex trade a crime is committed only by the consumer in the sex trade. The majority of consumers in prostitution are men and the suppliers are women. When prostitution is problematized it's usually from the woman's point of view and the perspective of the man is often overlooked. The new law has shed light on the consumer and made the male more visible in the public debate. The purpose of the present paper is to look into what has happened since the law was passed; what resources were allocated and how do local organisations work to offer support to men that buy sexual services of street prostitutes? Also, what explanations are there to why men do this? Who does it? In order to meet the aim with our essay we have examined contemporary research on the profiling of consumers and the phenomenon of purchase of sexual services. We have also done interviews with authorities and organisations in Malmö that work with the men. In the analysis of our material we have applied the theories that the referred to researchers and authors have used, as well as Mary Douglas' theory about the concept taboo and defect spirits. Our conclusions are that street prostitution in Malmö has decreased after the law was passed and that there's been very little knowledge about the sex purchasing men. Also we have understood that the buying of sexual services is under concept of taboo and that it is considere shameful by the society. The question is whether the law has shed light on the problems of prostitution or instead increased the concept of taboo in the society against the sex purchasing men?
