Ålen är en art som hotas av utrotning på grund av antropogen inverkan, framför allt på grund av kraftverksdammar som fragmenterar habitat och förhindrar artens livsnödvändiga migration upp- och nedströms vattendrag genom avsaknad av passagelösningar.
